About Jan: Jan Seale, the 2012 Texas Poet Laureate, has authored thirty books, including poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and children’s books. Her writing has also been published in such venues as Texas Monthly, Writer’s Digest, Newsday, and The Yale Review. She has held a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry and has been a Humanities Scholar for Humanities Texas. Her latest books are "Elder Skelter" and "Border Biome."

Emmy Pérez, Texas Poet Laureate 2020, is the author of the poetry collections with the River on Our Face and Solstice. Her latest book Paper America: New and Selected Poems is forthcoming in 2025. Raised in Santa Ana, California, she has lived in the Texas borderlands for the past 24 years. She is a professor of Creative Writing and affiliate faculty in Mexican American Studies at UTRGV. Currently, she holds the Dr. Robert S. Nelsen Professorship in Mexican American Studies 2021-2024.

Award-winning RGV poet César L. de León will be joining the lineup for STBF Presents: Poetry Night - Verses from Our Roots at Main on Thursday, April 10th at 6PM! We are so happy to welcome him back at the Library! About the Poet: César L. de León has been a resident of the Rio Grande Valley for more than 30 years. He is the author of "Speaking with Grackles by Soapberry Trees" and has contributed to numerous anthologies and journals over the years. "Speaking with Grackles by Soapberry Trees" is the recipient of the 2021 John A. Robertson Award from the Texas Institute of Letters and the 2022 Best Book of Poetry Award from the Philosophical Society of Texas. Cesar is a poet-organizer for Poets Against Walls and a member of the Macondo Writers Workshop.

We are so happy to announce Amanda Puryear El as one of our featured poets for STBF Presents: Poetry Night at Main Library on Thursday, April 10th from 6:00-8:00PM! About Amanda: Amanda was born and raised in Pharr, Texas. She has always held a strong work ethic, which has given her the opportunity to work in many different avenues. Amanda turned her youthful stubbornness into a reality that required a lot of work, change, and dedication. She grew up expecting nothing for herself, but she always wanted and strived for more. Amanda beat the odds by changing her mentality and perspective. By focusing on changing her outlook and access, she grew to love working in marketing for the music and television entertainment industry, where she combined her local survival skills and introduced them to the national stage, working for several companies such as Telemundo, Advertir, Puro Tejano TV, Cennarium, and Wall Street. Amanda currently lives in Pharr, TX, and has published 10 books. On October 29th, she brought poetry to a TEDx stage. She has also been nominated for the 2025 State of Texas Poet Laureate appointment by the State of Texas Arts Commission and is currently working on a spoken word poetry album.

It continues this morning, seen from the west lawn and towards the Discovery Center. Original photos of the bird are at the eBird checklist linked below. https://ebird.org/checklist/S222937420 Notes on Flame-colored Tanager: - This species is mostly seen in the mountains of Mexico - There have only been a few records of this bird in the RGV - The last record was also from Quinta Mazatlan in April 2024 - It was seen eating fruits from Anacua trees (Ehretia anacua) We're open til 5pm today, so still plenty of time to come try for this cool bird!

We'll be Celebrating Trees & Starting Seeds this Saturday at the Tiny Forests at south Ware Road and Jordan Road (3554 Jordan Rd W, McAllen, TX). Join our naturalists to learn how to start some of our favorite local trees. Participants will get to take home some seeds to start in their space, as well as have the opportunity to go on a guided nature walk through the three Tiny Forests. Thanks to the rain there is already lots of new growth! Celebrating Trees & Starting Seeds is this Saturday, April 5th, from 9 - 11 AM. Meet Our April Bird of the Month, the RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD! These beloved flying jewels return to the Rio Grande Valley from Central America during spring migration, and are just one of several species we're lucky to see here in the Valley. FUN FACTS 🔴 Males' iridescent throat feathers only look ruby red at the correct angle, appearing dark red or even black at other angles. Females and juveniles lack the ruby throat. 🔴 They routinely fly around 30 mph, with their wings beating over 50 times a second. 🔴 Hummingbird wings move in a figure-eight—not just up and down like other birds. 🔴 They can stop on a dime, hover, and even fly backward and upside-down! 🔴 Their legs are super short and their feet aren't well-developed, so they can't hop or even really walk, except to shuffle along a perch. 🔴 Learn more on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/ruby-throated_hummingbird HOW TO ATTRACT 🔴 Plant natives that produce tubular flowers, especially red or orange ones.
