Welcome back, Crimson-collared Grosbeak! This is the second time this year that this rare species has shown up in the park - the first was back in February. These birds are mostly found in northeastern Mexico, from around Monterrey south to Veracruz, but will occasionally wander into the Rio Grande Valley. When they do show up in the RGV, they really love eating the berries of the Potato Tree (Solanum erianthum), which we have in abundance over by the Discovery Center. Listening for their high-pitched whistle is often the best way to find them!

The Nature Series presentation on Specialty Birds of the Rio Grande Valley takes place on Saturday, December 13 at 1:00PM in the Main Library Auditorium. This session offers an engaging look at the region’s unique bird species and provides an enjoyable learning experience for bird enthusiasts at any level.

Pops of red from our native Chile Pequin are a signal of the upcoming holiday season. Loved by birds and humans alike, these pea-sized chiles pack fiery power and are about five times hotter than a jalapeno. The fruits are bird-dispersed by Curve-billed Thrashers, Mockingbirds and many other species. While birds are unbothered by the heat, humans have come to love the delicious pain that comes from these native chiles. Winter isn't just cooler for us ❄️—it’s a real survival test for birds 🐦. With longer nights 🌙 and colder temperatures 🥶, their internal “heaters” (metabolism) have to work overtime. While food is a must, water is just as critical 💧. Birds need water to stay hydrated and to keep their feathers clean—essential for insulation and warmth.
