SPRING MIGRATION is well underway, with millions of birds flying overhead AT NIGHT. About 1 in 3 U.S. spring migration birds are thought to pass through our great state—which puts a big responsibility on us.
Audubon Texas is reminding all Texas homeowners and businesses to help protect migrating birds by "turning off all non-essential nighttime lighting on buildings and other structures from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night."
For ESSENTIAL lights, it helps to aim them down, use shields, and/or install motion sensors. See the Lights Out Texas page for more tips: https://tx.audubon.org/urbanconservation/lights-out-texas

Project FeederWatch is an annual survey of backyard birds that's going on right now through the end of April.
❇️ All you have to do is pick two consecutive days a week to record the birds at your feeder, for as little or as long as you have time for. You can even count for just one week. 🗓️ ✍️ April 29 is the last day to start your two-day count!
❇️ Then report the data to help scientists track long-term trends in distribution and abundance of birds.
❇️ It's a really fun solo, family, or classroom activity!
❇️ Registration costs $18, which is used to help fund the project.
❇️ To learn more or join, go to feederwatch.org.

The sights of Quinta Mazatlan today were full of activity by people, plant, and wildlife! Birders were excited to see the rare Flame-colored Tanager (photo by Nestor Hernandez), a species that has only been recorded a few times in the RGV. To go along with the bright flowers of the thornforest, we also had the addition of the gorgeous arrangements and set up for a wedding ceremony. Keep up with what's going on in the park by visiting quintamazatlan.com!
Drop in for this Saturday's STEM Stops to explore experiments focusing on tectonic plate movement and its role in reshaping continents and influencing climate change over millions of years! #stemstops#quintamazatlan#earthformation#geology
Recent studies link seeing a greater diversity in bird species to boosts in mental well-being. In other words, when you see many different kinds of birds, you feel better!
How do you boost YOUR backyard diversity? Be strategic!
Different birds like DIFFERENT TYPES OF FEEDERS. So set out a variety of feeders, use the right foods in them, then make seasonal adjustments. And don't forget water sources!

Folks are excited to see the rare Flame-colored Tanager that was initially reported yesterday here at Quinta Mazatlan. It continues this morning, seen from the west lawn and towards the Discovery Center. Original photos of the bird are at the eBird checklist linked below.
https://ebird.org/checklist/S222937420
Notes on Flame-colored Tanager:
- This species is mostly seen in the mountains of Mexico
- There have only been a few records of this bird in the RGV
- The last record was also from Quinta Mazatlan in April 2024
- It was seen eating fruits from Anacua trees (Ehretia anacua)
We're open til 5pm today, so still plenty of time to come try for this cool bird!
Our partners at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands & World Birding Center (EWBC) have had some wonderful visitors lately! 🦜 This juvenile Lazuli Bunting is quite a rare sight here in the Rio Grande Valley. 🌟 Thankfully, it seems to be enjoying the seeds from our Eliminator feeder and has been sticking around for a few weeks now. 🌾 Other birds, like Indigo Buntings and Summer Tanagers, are also loving the feeder set up and surrounding habitat. 🐦
A big thank you to Claire Rodriguez from EWBC for sharing these amazing photos with us! 📸
The Eliminator is our top-rated squirrel-proof feeder, with springs that close when squirrels try to access the seeds inside. 🐿️🚫 You can purchase one in-store or online for 20% off with our current feeder and house sale! The promotion only lasts until April 13th so don’t miss out. https://ebit.ly/42pcnfl
As spring migration picks up, it’s the perfect time to make sure your feeders are stocked with nutritious food for the migrating birds. 🌱🐦 We have a variety of feeders and seeds available. Stop by and see us! 🌸

Meet Our April Bird of the Month, the RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD!
These beloved flying jewels return to the Rio Grande Valley from Central America during spring migration, and are just one of several species we're lucky to see here in the Valley.
FUN FACTS
🔴 Males' iridescent throat feathers only look ruby red at the correct angle, appearing dark red or even black at other angles. Females and juveniles lack the ruby throat.
🔴 They routinely fly around 30 mph, with their wings beating over 50 times a second.
🔴 Hummingbird wings move in a figure-eight—not just up and down like other birds.
🔴 They can stop on a dime, hover, and even fly backward and upside-down!
🔴 Their legs are super short and their feet aren't well-developed, so they can't hop or even really walk, except to shuffle along a perch.
🔴 Learn more on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/ruby-throated_hummingbird
HOW TO ATTRACT
🔴 Plant natives that produce tubular flowers, especially red or orange ones. Examples include Salvia (Mealy-Cup or Blue Sage [Salvia farinacea]; Autumn Sage [Salvia greggii]; and Scarlet Sage [Salvia coccinea]), Drummond’s Turk’s Cap, Tropical Sage, and Texas Lantana. Local nurseries that specialize in natives can help, like Rancho Lomitas Native Plant Nursery.
🔴 Hang a red or red-accented hummingbird feeder. Be sure it's safe from cats!
🔴 Use a high-quality nectar like ours, or if you have time, make your own. See our Bird of the Month page for the recipe: https://mcallen.wbu.com/bird-of-the-month
🔴 Replace the nectar in your feeders every couple of days to prevent bacteria and mold. Or try our Feeder Fresh™ Nectar Defender™, which contains a bird-safe mineral micronutrient that stops spoilage and helps nectar last for weeks.
🗓️ Don't miss our May 10th FREE TALK "Turn Your Yard into a Bird Paradise Using Native Plants" with Roberto Gaitan, President of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1BRMKBDrTz/

These three stunning collections of photographs from the Rio Grande Valley are a must-see! 📸✨
These books showcase breathtaking images from wildlife photography contests organized by The Valley Land Fund. For 35 years, the Valley Land Fund has played a vital role in conserving wildlife in the Rio Grande Valley. 🦅🌿 With less than 5% of the native habitat remaining (source: Valley Land Fund), this unique landscape provides shelter and food for numerous extraordinary species—many of which are not found elsewhere in the US!
In 1994, they launched their first Wildlife Photography Contest, where local landowners and photographers collaborate to showcase the amazing wildlife of our region. 🦋🐦 The books also feature beautiful photos from the Southern Exposure Youth Nature Photo Contest! Supporting the Valley Land Fund is an excellent way to protect our native habitat and the incredible species that call it home.

Sights from Quinta Mazatlan today. Staff gave a garden design workshop to help participants learn tools and get ideas for how they can add water-conserving and biodiversity-supporting plants to their spaces. Many plants are in bloom, with bright and beautiful insects visiting them. Among those insects were Spotted Woolcarder bees, (Anthidium maculosum), which potentially haven't been seen in the RGV since the 1940s, prior to being seen at the National Butterfly Center, a private residence, and now at Quinta Mazatlan this year.

SPRING MIGRATION is well underway, with millions of birds flying overhead AT NIGHT. About 1 in 3 U.S. spring migration birds are thought to pass through our great state—which puts a big responsibility on us. Audubon Texas is reminding all Texas homeowners and businesses to help protect migrating birds by "turning off all non-essential nighttime lighting on buildings and other structures from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night." For ESSENTIAL lights, it helps to aim them down, use shields, and/or install motion sensors. Meet Our April Bird of the Month, the RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD! These beloved flying jewels return to the Rio Grande Valley from Central America during spring migration, and are just one of several species we're lucky to see here in the Valley. FUN FACTS 🔴 Males' iridescent throat feathers only look ruby red at the correct angle, appearing dark red or even black at other angles. 🔴 Learn more on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/ruby-throated_hummingbird HOW TO ATTRACT 🔴 Plant natives that produce tubular flowers, especially red or orange ones. See our Bird of the Month page for the recipe: https://mcallen.wbu.com/bird-of-the-month 🔴 Replace the nectar in your feeders every couple of days to prevent bacteria and mold. Or try our Feeder Fresh™ Nectar Defender™, which contains a bird-safe mineral micronutrient that stops spoilage and helps nectar last for weeks. 🗓️ Don't miss our May 10th FREE TALK "Turn Your Yard into a Bird Paradise Using Native Plants" with Roberto Gaitan, President of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1BRMKBDrTz/ Happy birding, from the RGV's friendly backyard bird feeding experts! ❤️🐦 #wbumcallen #rgvbirds #backyardbirding #mcallentexas #riograndevalley #Riograndevalleytexas #birding #birds

If you're looking for cool spots to check out RGV plants, check out our RGV Nature Sites map at our website (link below). quintamazatlan.com/birding-nature (click on the map at the bottom).

Please 👍LIKE and SHARE ↗️ to help spread the word! These three stunning collections of photographs from the Rio Grande Valley are a must-see! 📸✨ These books showcase breathtaking images from wildlife photography contests organized by The Valley Land Fund. These books aren’t just stunning— they inspire and educate, making them perfect additions to your coffee table! 🏞️📚 Happy birding, from the RGV's friendly backyard bird feeding experts! 💙🐦 #wbumcallen #rgvbirds #backyardbirding #mcallentexas #riograndevalley #Riograndevalleytexas
