It's good to move slow and look close when you're visiting Quinta Mazatlan. Did you know more than 1,000 species have been reported from the park? These are just a few of the recent observations - read below for names and notes! 1. Eastern Screech-Owl. This is a nestling bird, told by its less defined plumage, peeking out from its nest cavity in a dead palm tree. 2. Gulf Fritillary (caterpillar). These spikey beauties feast on passionflowers (plants in the genus passiflora). 3. Spot-tailed Dasher. These beautiful turquoise-eyed dragonflies are mostly found in south Texas and Florida in the US. 4. Berlandier's Fiddlewood. These large shrubs bloom and fruit profusely, and are a favorite of pollinating insects and frugivorous birds. 5. Crooked-legged Bee. These species in the genus Ancyloscelis get their name because of their distinctly crooked legs. They tend to prefer tubular flowers like morning glories, such as this Alamo Vine (Distimake dissectus).

Here’s What to Do! 🐣 It’s that time of year when fledglings and nestlings start showing up in our yards—and it can be hard to tell if they need help or are just going through a natural stage of growing up. Before stepping in, it’s important to assess the situation carefully. We’re sharing two helpful flow charts to guide you: 🔹 The first is from the National Audubon Society—a fantastic resource to walk you through what to look for. America’s most fascinating bird species! We can help you turn your backyard into a bird paradise, buzzing with life! Meet Our May Bird of the Month, the Golden-fronted Woodpecker! These strikingly colored woodpeckers are the most common ones we see in the Rio Grande Valley and are resident year-round. FUN FACTS 🤓 🟡 Golden-fronted woodpeckers don't usually excavate to feed. Instead, they tend to pick insects from vegetation (aka, "gleaning"), or may peck or probe. 🟡 If you see one with purple stains on its face, it's likely been eating prickly pear fruits. They also go for hackberry, agarita, and persimmon, among other native plants. 🟡 The red crown is what most easily sets males apart from females. The male's nape is also more yellow-orange vs. just yellow on females. 🟡 They do excavate trees or poles to create a nesting cavity. Did you know a woodpecker's head can strike a tree's surface at speeds up to 13-15 mph, at over 100 strokes per minute? That's like a person crashing head first into a tree while running at top speed!
