Today, we mourn the loss of our leader, mentor, and dear friend, Joe Vera. As staff, he didn’t just give us what we could handle—he gave us more than we thought we could handle. He challenged us, inspired us, and always pushed us beyond our comfort zones. And through it all, we created magic together. Mr. Vera touched the lives of millions. A true champion of South Texas, a trailblazer for Hispanics in arts, entertainment, festivals, and events—he put McAllen on the map and gave our city a seat at tables across the nation and the world. Simply put, Mr. Vera was—and will forever be—a legend. His presence will be missed every day, but his legacy will live on in every event we produce, every stage we build, and every smile we see in the crowd. He often reminded us: “It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.” Thank you, Mr. Vera, for making the impossible possible. Your legacy lives on in every moment of joy you helped create. Cedar fever cure? Probably not but worth a try 🪵 Originally brewed in 2013 as a cedar-aged hoppy farmhouse ale, El Cedro returns in 2025 reimagined through a new lens. Now a pure culture West Coast IPA, it’s built on a base of Pilsner malt and loaded with Simcoe, Mosaic, Columbus, Amarillo, and Citra Cryo. During the first dry hop, we added Spanish Cedar spirals straight into the tank, layering in that signature woodsy spice alongside waves of citrus zest and classic IPA piney bitterness. El Cedro brings together cedar cabin warmth, Hill Country brush, and citrus oil over a crisp, clean bitterness—for a brew that drinks like a deep breath under the big Texas sky. Very limited package. We are so happy to announce Amanda Puryear El as one of our featured poets for STBF Presents: Poetry Night at Main Library on Thursday, April 10th from 6:00-8:00PM! About Amanda: Amanda was born and raised in Pharr, Texas. She has always held a strong work ethic, which has given her the opportunity to work in many different avenues. Amanda turned her youthful stubbornness into a reality that required a lot of work, change, and dedication. She grew up expecting nothing for herself, but she always wanted and strived for more. Amanda beat the odds by changing her mentality and perspective. By focusing on changing her outlook and access, she grew to love working in marketing for the music and television entertainment industry, where she combined her local survival skills and introduced them to the national stage, working for several companies such as Telemundo, Advertir, Puro Tejano TV, Cennarium, and Wall Street. Amanda currently lives in Pharr, TX, and has published 10 books. On October 29th, she brought poetry to a TEDx stage. She has also been nominated for the 2025 State of Texas Poet Laureate appointment by the State of Texas Arts Commission and is currently working on a spoken word poetry album.

These beloved flying jewels return to the Rio Grande Valley from Central America during spring migration, and are just one of several species we're lucky to see here in the Valley. FUN FACTS 🔴 Males' iridescent throat feathers only look ruby red at the correct angle, appearing dark red or even black at other angles.
