Meet Our July Bird of the Month, the RED-CROWNED AMAZON! This parrot is one of several parrots and parakeets that can be found in the Rio Grande Valley.🦜 🦜 🦜 THIS SATURDAY, we have 2 FREE parrot events for you to get to know these birds better—they're real characters! 🎤 First, from 2–3 p.m. in our store, Terrilyn “Terri” Alaniz, President of the Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society, will be telling us all about the parrots and parakeets of the RGV. 👀👣 Then at 7 p.m., Terri will be leading a parrot walk at Brownsville's Oliveira Park. 🌐 Details at https://mcallen.wbu.com/events and https://www.facebook.com/arroyocoloradoaudubonsociety FUN FACTS 🤓 🟢 First recorded in the Valley in 1885, Red-crowned Amazons are now considered native to the area. 🟢 They are endangered in Mexico due to habitat loss and poaching for the pet trade. 🟢 One of their best-known roosts in the Valley is in the pecan trees of Oliveira Park in Brownsville. 🟢 They use their bill like a hand to help them move around branches. 🟢 They often forage in flocks, and eat mostly the seeds and fruit of tropical plants, and are great seed-spreaders. 🟢 They nest in old woodpecker holes or natural tree cavities. 🟢 They pair up for life.
